“Unruhe” which means unrest in German, is as a split-screen video, where the only sounds you hear are a bell and the ocean. In one sequence, you are presented with views of footprints in the sand and then the camera moves as if someone is walking, then running and then cuts to scenes of heads floating in the ocean. The heads float and move through the water as if they are part of the landscape. The water returns these heads (bodies) to their primal yet unattainable state…they all occupy the same position within the landscape. This is contrasted with an 8mm B&W sequence, which has a jarring dream-like quality. In the opening, you see a talking mouth, yet you hear nothing. The mouth sarcastically smiles then the video cuts to the heads manipulated, at times aggressively, by anonymous hands and feet. This sequence represents the heads in their “real” state, that of continual unrest.
