This series is about creating new mythologies utilizing both elements of fantasy and science fiction. Photographed on Islamorada in the Florida Keys, these young brown-skinned girls wear a mask made from a photo transfer on fabric of a white woman and occupy a landscape that the western gaze would deem tropical and exotic, stereotyping its inhabitants as sensuous and untamed. Yet, the pale faces against the brown bodies creates a psychological disconnect that interrupts this narrative. Almost in the manner of blackface, these young girls wear the “skin” of a white woman upon their faces, at once thematizing the erasure they face and at the same time using the weapon of the oppressor against itself.
