The story of disco, gay and black liberation run in close parallel. Rooted in the Bronx, it was a movement that created a sub-culture that introduced major innovations in the way music is envisioned and heard today. It was the DJ who introduced it and came of age at this time. The series Larry Levan (2006), utilizes this important figure in DJ culture to focus on the importance of the DJ in terms of transcendence. Dancers in a club worship life through dance and music. The DJ is not so much about choosing a few tunes but about generating shared moods, understanding the feelings of a group. It’s about breaking the audience-artist, DJ and dancer become one.
